If you are planning to upgrade or refresh the flooring in your home there are many flooring types and installation facts that should considered. It can be overwhelming for homeowners to select which type of flooring would be the best option for them whether it is hardwood, carpet, stone or concrete, vinyl plank flooring or the best laminate flooring.

Flooring Types -Where is the flooring going to be installed?

There is a huge difference in flooring types. You should take into account the space where you will be installing the flooring. For instance the kitchen would require possibly something quite different than the bedroom. The main entrance to the home is commonly a very high traffic area that will be exposed to more dirt and wear.

What will it cost to be installed?

The homeowner cannot always install different flooring types themselves. A contractor may have to be hired and certain types of flooring can be very labor intensive to put in.

How much will the floor cost?

The actual cost of the floor will depend on the size of the area that is going to be covered. If you are doing it yourself add about 10% extra flooring materials and consider the types of tools you may need.

The Most Common Flooring Types

When it comes to flooring you most commonly think about hardwood, carpeting, laminate or vinyl, brick, stone, concrete or tile.

Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood floors probably add the most value to a home but it is also very pricey. Wood floors are warm and inviting. They are not as cold under the feet or as noisy as stone or tile. After years of use they can be refinished and restored to look almost new. On the other hand they can require a professional contractor to install raising the cost. The color of the wood will change or fade in the sunlight.

Stone Flooring

Stone flooring offers a classic, very natural and elegant look that is very attractive as well as durable. Stone will also add value to the home. After installation and a periodic sealing it will resist staining and is very damage resistant. This type of flooring is great for kitchens, bathrooms and high traffic areas.

Tile Flooring

This can cost a bit less than stone yet is almost as durable and attractive. It is great for areas like kitchens, baths and laundry rooms. When tile is wet can be very slippery and tiles can be chipped or cracked if something extremely heavy is dropped. It can be easier to install than stone or hardwood for the do-it-yourself type.

Vinyl Plank Flooring and the Best Laminate Flooring

Vinyl and laminate floors are inexpensive and easy to install and easy to clean. Of all the flooring types this is the most practical and durable. It is warmer and quieter under foot than tile and stone. It is not as elegant as some of the other flooring types but many good looking and stylish patterns can be found.
